The European Ichthyological Society (EIS) was founded in 1976. The society primarily provides a platform for cooperation between European ichthyologists, but membership is open to all interested. The main activity of the Society has been to promote congresses of European ichthyologists which have been held at three-year intervals from 1973.
The XII European Congress of Ichthyology was successfully held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, 9-13 September 2007.
The XIII European Congress of Ichthyology will be held from 6 to 11 September 2009 in Klaipeda, Lithuania.
